    4. Receive Acceptance Letter and Pre-Enrollment Certificate:

What is Cyprus's type D (long stay) visa?
  • Here’s a concise summary of the information about Cyprus’s Type D (long stay) visa:

    • Type D Visa (long stay Visa):
      • Validity: Designed for stays exceeding 90 days. This is for students and job seekers in Cyprus.
      • Work: You can work only in Cyprus with your Cyprus student visa.
      • Temporary Residence Permit (TRP): Apply for a TRP once you arrive in Cyprus to stay longer for your education.
What Documents are required for the visa?
  1. A completed visa application form.
  2. Two  Passport-sized photos, taken against a white background, newer than 6 months
  3. Passport valid at least for a year
  4. Proof of financial means: a bank statement, sponsorship letter, or scholarship documentation is required.
  5. Documents confirming the purpose of travel and conditions of stay:
    • Documents that you received from your university (acceptance).
    • Proof of tuition fee payment, either from the school or from a bank.
    • School leaving certificates confirming that you are eligible to study at under/postgraduate level or
    • Proof of academic degrees confirming you are eligible to study at a postgraduate level.
    • NB. Documents should be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia (MOFA). Originals and copies.
  6. The visa fee = 60 EUR.
01. Acceptance Letter from Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) in Canada
  • You’ll need an acceptance letter from the Canadian educational institution where you plan to study.

02. Valid Passport or Travel Document
  • Online applicants should upload a copy of the information page of their passport during the application process.
  • Once approved, you’ll need to send your original passport.
03. Two Recent Passport-Size Photos
  • Write the name and date of birth of the applicant on the back of each photo.

04. Proof of Financial Support
  • You must demonstrate that you can support yourself and any accompanying family members while in Canada.
  • Acceptable forms of proof include:
    • Proof of a student or education loan from a bank (if applicable)
    • Bank statements for the past 4 months
    • A bank draft that can be converted to Canadian dollars
    • Evidence of tuition and housing fee payments
  • The minimum funds required to support yourself as a student are $10,000 CAD plus your first-year tuition fee.
  • You can also provide additional documents related to assets in Ethiopia, such as a vehicle registration certificate.
05. Letter of Explanation/Study Plan/Motivation Letter
  • This letter helps the visa officer understand your goals and why you want to study in Canada. It also confirms your understanding of your responsibilities as a student.

06. Police Clearance Certificate
  • This certificate shows whether you have any criminal record.
07. Medical Certificate
  • You can undergo the medical exam either before or after applying for a student permit.
  • The examination ensures you are not inadmissible for medical reasons.
  • The physical examination should be carried out at the following institution in Addis Ababa:
    • IOM Addis Ababa
    • Address: Bole Kefle Ketema, Woreda 03/05, Meseret Defar Road, Behind Millennium Hall.
Associated Costs
  • Study Permit Application Fee: $150 CAD
  • Biometric Fee: $80 CAD
    • You may also need to pay third-party fees, such as medical check fees and police clearance fees.

 

Study Permit Details
  • A study permit allows foreign nationals to study at DLIs in Canada.
  • Note that a study permit is not a visa; it does not grant entry into Canada.
  • You may also require a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA).
  • If your study permit is approved, an eTA will be issued along with it.
  • Typically, a study permit is valid for the duration of your study program, plus an additional 90 days. Use these 90 days to prepare to leave Canada or apply for an extension if needed. 

 

Work Hour Regulations
  • During academic semesters: Maximum 20 hours per week

  • During scheduled breaks (summer/winter): Full-time permitted (40 hours per week)

  • On-campus employment: No hourly restrictions when working for the institution

Off-Campus Work Eligibility Requirements
  • To work off-campus without a separate work permit, students must:

    1. Be enrolled full-time at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)

    2. Have commenced their academic program

    3. Be pursuing a degree or diploma program

    4. Possess a valid study permit with work authorization

    5. Have obtained a Social Insurance Number (SIN)

  • Exceeding 20 work hours per week during active study periods constitutes a violation of study permit conditions. Such violations may result in:

    • Loss of student status

    • Ineligibility for future study or work permits
