General Information About Studying in the USA

Studying in the USA offers world-class education, diverse cultural experiences, and excellent career opportunities. International students typically enter on an F-1 visa, which requires enrollment at a SEVP-certified institution.

On-Campus Employment
  • Allowed for up to 20 hours per week during academic sessions.

  • Full-time work permitted during breaks.

  • Must be authorized by the Designated School Official (DSO).

Off-Campus Employment
  1. Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

    • Work directly related to the field of study.

    • Requires authorization from the DSO.

  2. Optional Practical Training (OPT)

    • Pre-completion OPT: Work before degree completion.

    • Post-completion OPT: Work after graduation (up to 12 months).

  3. STEM OPT Extension

    • Students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields may extend OPT for an additional 24 months.

Steps to Obtain an F-1 Visa
  1. Get Accepted to a SEVP-Certified School

    • Receive Form I-20 from the university.

  2. Pay SEVIS Fee & Complete DS-160 Form

    • Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee (~$350).

    • Fill out the DS-160 Visa Application.

  3. Schedule Visa Interview

    • Attend an interview at a U.S. Embassy/Consulate.

    • Be prepared to discuss study plans, finances, and ties to home country.
